Created in 1397 as Faculty of Theology at the Cracow Studium Generale (today’s Jagiellonian University). Closed in 1954 by the communist regime, and reopened 1959 as an independent scientific institution. In 1981 Pope John Paul II established the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Cracow, with three faculties: Theology, Philosophy and the History of the Church. Acquired current title in 2009.
